Where to Start When Opening an Ice Cream or Paleta Business

Where People Get It Wrong From the Start

When someone tells me they want to open an ice cream shop, the first thing they usually ask about is the machine.

That’s already backwards.

Not because machines don’t matter, but because at that point they don’t even know what they actually need yet.

Most people are trying to make a decision before they understand the problem.

“Ice Cream” Doesn’t Mean Anything

One of the biggest issues is how people use the word “ice cream.”To most people, anything cold and sweet falls into that category. But in reality, what they’re thinking about could be gelato, sorbet, paletas, or soft serve. Each one is made differently. Each one behaves differently. And each one requires a completely different type of machine.

So when someone says, “I want to sell ice cream,” the first thing we have to figure out is what that actually means.

The Machine Isn’t the Starting Point

Once you understand what you want to make, then the equipment starts to make sense.

Before that, it doesn’t.

Because the machine isn’t what defines your business. Your product does.

The menu you want to offer is what determines how you produce, how fast you produce, what equipment you need, and how your whole setup is going to work.

If you skip that step, you’re not choosing equipment. You’re just guessing.

Where People Lose Money

We’ve seen people buy machines just because the price was good, the brand sounded familiar, or someone told them it was a good deal.

Then they get it running and realize something’s off.

The texture isn’t right.

The output isn’t what they expected.

The product doesn’t match what they had in mind.

At that point, they think something is wrong with them or their recipe.

But the issue started way before that, with the wrong machine.

It’s Not Just About Buying Equipment

Even if you choose the right machine, that’s still not the full picture.

You still have to think about your electrical setup, cooling requirements, available space, and how everything flows together.

Those things don’t come up until later for most people, and by then they’re already committed.

The Part Most People Skip (But Shouldn’t)

The best thing you can do in the beginning is simple.

Go out and experience it.

Try different products. Visit different shops. Pay attention to what stands out to you.

Not just what tastes good, but what kind of setup is behind it.Because once you know what you actually want to create, everything else starts to fall into place.

Final Thought

Opening an ice cream or paleta business isn’t about finding the right machine first.

It’s about understanding what you want to build, and then choosing the right tools to support it.

If you get that order right, you save yourself time, money, and a lot of frustration.

And if you’re not sure yet, that’s exactly where we come in to help you figure it out before you invest in the wrong direction.
